Songkran 2027 in Kuala Lumpur: Thai New Year Water Festival Guide

Songkran, the Thai New Year, falls on 13–15 April 2027. You don’t need to fly to Bangkok to join in: Kuala Lumpur has a big Thai community, and the city celebrates with water play, temple blessings and Thai street food.

The 2027 programme has not been announced yet (checked 11 October 2026). This page will be updated when the organisers confirm dates. Below is what to expect, based on recent years.

Malaysia’s Premier Songkran Festival (1 Utama)

In recent years the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has organised Malaysia’s Premier Songkran Festival at 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. The 2026 edition ran from 9 to 19 April at the mall’s outdoor forecourt. It had a Thai street market of around 50 booths, mostly Thai food, plus water activities from 5pm to 11pm and the food bazaar from noon to midnight.

Watch for the 2027 dates from the Royal Thai Embassy and 1 Utama. Official news from the embassy is posted on the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Temple blessings at Wat Chetawan

For the traditional side of Songkran, visit Wat Chetawan, the Thai Buddhist temple off Jalan Gasing in Petaling Jaya, built in 1957. At Songkran, worshippers pour scented water over Buddha images and over the hands of monks and elders as a sign of respect and to receive blessings. Dress modestly and be respectful during ceremonies.

Getting there from Cormar Suites

  • 1 Utama Shopping Centre: about 25–35 minutes by Grab, depending on traffic.
  • Wat Chetawan, Petaling Jaya: about 20–30 minutes by Grab.
  • Expect to get wet: put your phone in a waterproof pouch and wear quick-dry clothes and sandals.

Plan your Songkran stay

Cormar Suites at 10 Jalan Perak is in central Kuala Lumpur, near KL Tower, KLCC and KL City Walk. The serviced apartments have a kitchen, washer and living space, which is useful after a day of water fights. Parry Road Café is downstairs. April is also one of KL’s hottest months, so the rooftop infinity pool is a bonus.
