Applying for a Thai Visa from Kuala Lumpur

Applying for a Thai Visa from Kuala Lumpur

Planning to go on to Thailand from KL, or need a Thai visa while you are here? The old “visa run” playbook of queuing at the embassy and flying back the next day no longer works. Since October 2024 the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur only accepts visa applications online, and processing takes about a week. Here is how it works now.

First Check: Do You Need a Visa at All?

From 15 September 2026, Thailand’s visa exemption for tourism is 30 days (down from 60) for about 60 eligible nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia. A new 15-day tourist exemption applies to two further countries or territories. If your passport qualifies and you are visiting as a tourist, you may not need a visa. Check the current list with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you book.

These exemptions are for tourism. If you are travelling for another purpose, check which visa category applies to you.

How to Apply: e-Visa Only

Since 8 October 2024, anyone in Malaysia applying for a Thai visa must use the official e-Visa portal at thaievisa.go.th and select the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. You do not hand in your passport or original documents at the embassy.

  • Processing: about 7 days, excluding weekends and public holidays, and longer if your application is incomplete.
  • When to apply: the embassy advises applying 7 to 14 days before you travel. Most visas are valid for 90 days, so don’t apply more than three months ahead.
  • Fees: paid online with the application. They are non-refundable.
  • Documents and photo: uploaded to the portal. Check the embassy’s “Visa Types, Fees & Requirements” page for your visa type.
  • Approval: you get a confirmation email. Print it to show the airline and Thai immigration.

Royal Thai Embassy Kuala Lumpur

The embassy is at 206 Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur. The consular section’s hours are Monday to Friday, 09:30–12:30 and 14:30–16:30. The embassy closes on its own announced holidays, so check its website before you visit. You don’t need to visit in person for a visa unless the embassy asks you to come in for an interview, which applies to some nationalities.

Planning Your Time in KL

Because processing takes about a week, plan for a longer stay instead of a two-night dash. Direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok take about two hours, so once your e-Visa is approved, getting there is easy.

Common Mistakes

  • Turning up at the embassy with your passport. Applications are online only.
  • Applying too late. Allow about 7 working days, plus holidays.
  • Applying too early. Most visas are valid for 90 days, so don’t apply more than three months ahead.
  • Sending an incomplete application, which slows processing.
  • Relying on old 60-day exemption advice. The tourist exemption has been 30 days since 15 September 2026.
